PHILADELPHIA – La Salle sophomore Jon Gyles and Villanova senior righthander Brian Streilein have been named the Philadelphia Big 5 player and pitcher of the week, respectively, in voting conducted by the city’s head coaches and sports information offices.
Gyles batted .636 (7-for-11) in three games for the Explorers at NC State. Two of his five hits were doubles and he drove in five runs. He had at least two hits and registered an RBI in all three games.
That included a career-high tying three-hit day for Gyles on Sunday, when he also drove in a career-high tying three runs. He also played a flawless first base, a position he played at in just seven games in 2009.
Streilein struck out 12 batters in 6.2 scoreless innings on Friday in a 13-2 victory at Norfolk State. He scattered three hits and walked three. The 12 strikeouts are the most by a Wildcat pitcher since 2002.
The Big 5 will announce its weekly player and pitcher awards every Tuesday throughout the season. The fifth annual all-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the end of the season.
