HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL -
Sophomore Ed Carnes shot a team-best 76 (+5) to lead the La Salle golf team on the first day of the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship played at the Mission Inn Resort on Friday. Carnes, who is tied for 18th place, shot an even-par 36 on the back nine.
"My expectations are always to go out and shoot par," Carnes said. "But a 76 on this course is pretty good. My driver was especially good today."
Classmate Randy Kurzinsky was next on the LU scorecard with an 83 (+12) and is tied for 44th with Tyler Batory. Freshmen Joe Taormina (99) and James Chrismer (112) rounded out the La Salle contingent.
Fueled by defending champion Corey Nagy's four-under 67, Charlotte holds a four-stroke lead over Richmond after 18 holes. Nagy overcame a sluggish start with six birdies over his final nine holes as he carded a 30 on the back nine.
Vying to become the first A-10 program to win five consecutive golf titles since Penn State accomplished the feat from 1986-91, the 49ers shot a four-over 288 for their round. Seeking its first-ever crown, Richmond (+8) stands in second, followed by George Washington (+14), Xavier (+18), Dayton (+22), St. Bonaventure (+25), Temple (+27), Rhode Island (+29), Saint Joseph's (+31), Fordham (+33), Duquesne (+52) and La Salle (+57).
Play resumes on Saturday at 8 AM.
