PHILADELPHIA - Seniors Gina Massaro and Mary Pat Conville were named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors Association (CoSIDA) on Thursday afternoon.
Massaro earned First Team honors and Conville was named to the Second Team. To qualify for consideration, players must have at least a 3.3 grade point average and be a starter or important reserve.
Both seniors have been the backbone of the La Salle offense in 2010, battling each other for the team-high batting average.
Massaro currently holds a .370 average, third in the Atlantic 10, with 44 hits, six of those for doubles and five RBI and has scored a team-high 30 runs. She held an 11-game hitting streak through the month of April and has reached base in all but two games this season. Massaro also leads the Explorer pitching staff with a 2.38 ERA and 101 strikeouts, and during a four-game stretch in April had given up just two earned runs in 32 innings pitched. She is graduating with a degree in Integrated Science, Business & Technology.
Conville registers a .343 average, eighth in the A-10. She has blasted a team-high 12 doubles and has batted in 18 runs. She leads the team in total bases (58) for a .433 slugging percentage. Conville is batting .321 for her career and reached the 150-hit mark earlier this season. She currently stands at 163 hits over her four years at 20th and Olney. Conville pulled double-duty this season as she was not only a full-time softball player, but completed her student-teaching semester as well in a high school math classroom.
The two wrap up their college careers this weekend, when the Explorers host St. Bonaventure in the final weekend of Atlantic 10 play. Senior Day is set for Saturday, prior to the noon game.
