PHILADELPHIA - Two La Salle boats advanced to the semifinals on the first day of the Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill River on Friday, including the men's Varsity 8 and men's Novice 4.
The Novice 4 boat easily won its heat, clocking a 7:07.372 and coming in nearly 12 seconds ahead of second-place Northwestern (7:19.276). The Explorers also topped Grand Valley State, Marquette and Catholic University. The semifinal is set for 7:25 AM with the Explorers in Lane 2. They will face Charleston College, Georgia Tech, Bowdoin, Penn State and Carnegie Mellon.
The men's Varsity 8 finished a close second in its race, rowing a 6:02.511 to Virginia's top time of 6:00.190. The Explorers topped third-place Saint Joseph's by eight seconds. Saturday's semifinal round is set for 10:00 AM, where the Explorers will face Temple, Delaware, Grand Valley State and Florida.
The men's Varsity Pair of Kevin North and Tom Apicella as well as the women's Novice 4 boat came in just shy of their respective semifinals. The pair finished fourth in its race with a time of 7:40.888 in a race where the top three advanced to the semis. The women's Novice 4 boat placed third in a race where the top two advanced, and clocked an 8:04.479.
