PHILADELPHIA - Recent graduates Joe Hughes and Max Orenstein were honored for their work in the classroom and on the water as they were named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team, announced by the Inquirer on Tuesday.

The duo helped La Salle men's rowing to new levels this past season, as both were rowers in the men's varsity eight that captured the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup. For that win, they were nominated for Row2K.com's 'Crew of the Week'. The two also rowed the varsity eight into the semifinals at this year's Dad Vail Regatta.

As a junior in 2009, Hughes won Dad Vail silver as a member of the varsity pair after advancing to the final via a second place finish in the semifinal.

Hughes and Orenstein graduated in May. Hughes earned a degree in Digital Art while Orenstein graduated with a degree in Communication.

To be eligible for the Academic All-Area Team, nominees must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. The team is voted on by the sports information directors at the 28 Philadelphia area institutions.
