PHILADELPHIA - With all seven scorers placing in the top 40, the La Salle men's cross country team captured the meet crown at the Br. John "Paddy" Doyle/Iona College Meet of Champions at New York's Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday morning. The women placed third as a team, behind top 10 finishes by Meghan Lutz and Stephanie Bearish.
Alfredo Santana (Philadelphia, PA/Nueva Esperanza) led the men with a 14th place overall finish out of 207 runners by running a 25:35.17 on the 8K course. Sean Ward (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville Area) came in immediately after with a 25:35.73 for 15th place. Tom Pannulla (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville Area) was the third Explorer, also posting a top 20 finish with a time of 25:47.25 for 19th.
Nick Crits (Ambler, PA/Wissahickon) and Dave Hausherr (Townsend, MA/North Middlesex) also turned in top 25 finishes, with Crits crossing the finish line in 25:54.68 for 22nd and Hausherr running a 25:56.46 for 23rd. Two rookies finished among the Explorers' top seven as Luke Arbuckle (Elkton, MD/Elkton High) placed 30th with a mark of 26:04.22 and Nico Greco (Hartford, CT/North West Catholic) was the seventh Explorer and 37th overall with a 26:09.89.
Joe Beveridge (44th; 26:13.64), Nick Ross (77th; 26:38.51), Vince Perozze (84th; 26:43.82) and Alex Brazinski (86th; 26:44.52) also ran for the Explorers, all finishing in the top half.
The Explorers, ranked 15th in the Mid-Atlantic region in the latest USTFCCCA poll, scored 93 points as team to finish with the meet crown. They topped Mid-Atlantic No. 12 Penn, which finished with 108 points. No. 13 Albany (Northeast region) rounded out the top three teams with 140 points. Brown (NE #15) and Harvard (NE #9) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Also in the field were several other ranked squads, including national No. 10/Northeast No. 2 Iona, Columbia (NE #4) and Kentucky (SE #11).
Lutz (Langhorne, PA/Nazareth Academy) and Bearish (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) led the Explorer women to third place via top six individual finishes. Lutz finished fifth overall out of 164 runners with a 6K time of 22:11.13 and Bearish crossed the finish line sixth with a time of 22:17.06.
Three more Explorers also posted top 20 times. Samantha Gallagher (Springfield, PA/Springfield) ran a 22:34.45 for 15th and rookies Michelle Capozzi (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) and Anne Areias (Southampton, PA/William Tennent) finished 19th and 20th, with times of 22:39.17 and 22:42.34, respectively.
Caitlin Storbeck (Eagleville, PA/Archbishop Carroll) also finished in the top 25, clocking a 22:48.76 for 23rd place. Wendy Hutchinson (Dover, PA/Dover) rounded out the top seven Explorers with a 23:11.73 for 35th. Caroline Grant (Springfield, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) also ran, finishing in 23:53.14 for 67th.
The Explorers, ranked ninth in the Mid-Atlantic region, finished with 65 points for third place as a team and just three points off of Kentucky's (SE #6) winning score of 62. Brown (NE #9) was second with 64 points. Penn (MA #7) and Columbia (NE #6) rounded out the top five teams. Also in the field were Lehigh (MA #12), Iona (NE #5) and Cincinnati (Great Lakes #14), which all finished in the top 10 of the team standings.

Several Explorer runners also competed at the Monmouth Invitational at Holmdel Park in Holmdel, NJ, on Saturday morning. The men's 'B' squad finished third out of four Division I teams in the open meet, and the women also finished third out of four D-I teams.
Kasey Gellar led the men with a seventh place individual finish in the five-mile race. Gellar clocked a 26:53.5. Also in the top 20 were Rob Ricketts (16th; 27:25.0), Andrew Mahoney (18th; 27:28.8) and Matt Finn (20th; 27:30.3).
Beth Walker and Alyssa Mullen led the Explorer women with 23rd and 24th place finishes individually. Walker ran a 20:18.1 in the 5K race with Mullen a half-second behind in 20:18.6. Jessica DiVenere finished 32nd with a time of 20:33.4. Rounding out the top five Explorer finishers were Colleen Boland (37th; 20:54.6) and Karen Wojciechowski (38th; 20:55.4).
