Student-athletes attended the second town hall meeting Thursday at the Dan Rodden Theater, this time on the topic of service. Helping the community is a big part of the La Salle University mission and the athletics department took time today to tell student-athletes about the benefits of becoming a Big Brother or a Big Sister.
Sherman Diaz, Director of Project Teamwork and Community Outreach, coordinated today’s event by inviting representatives from Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) as well as from Logan Elementary to speak to student-athletes and invite them to get involved with the program.
Louise Phillips, BBBS Match Specialist, discussed the details of how to become a Big Sister or a Big Brother and why it is so important for children to have someone who they have things in common with as a mentor. She also described how easy it is for student-athletes to make time and how just showing up to spend time means a lot.
Veronica Pitman, Guidance Counselor at Logan Elementary, also spoke to encourage students to get involved and become a positive influence on the children.
Also representing BBBS Southeastern Pennsylvania was Yvonne McPeak, VP of Intake Services, and Kara Rutledge, School-Base Program Coordinator. In addition, many current student-athletes who are already a “Big” were in attendance. Softball players Liz Reed and Shannon Skomorucha and Track member Jerome Brown each spoke about their participation in BBBS.
