KINGSTON, R.I. - Both the men’s and women’s swimming & diving squads finished in second at the Rhode Island Invitational.
The men tallied 541 points, finishing behind reigning A-10 champion Massachusetts’ 587.5. The women also finished behind Massachusetts by a margin of 517.5-478.
Austin Thomas led La Salle with three-first place finishes on the day, taking the 50-free (21.43), 100-free (47.20) and 100-fly (51.26).
Thomas also helped the 400 medley relay team to victory (3:30.13), along with Edward Carnes, Blase Szyszko and Charlie Zettel.
Szyszko had a pair of individual victories, winning the 100-breast (59.24) and 200-breast (2:09.99). Eric Patenaude took third in the 100-breast (1:01.81).
Zettel won the 200-fly (1:53.66) and took second in the 200-IM (1:56.51).
In the backstroke, Carnes finished second in both the 100 (53.34) and 200 (1:55.99).
The Explorers picked up a pair of second-place relay finishes, swimming a 1:27.32 in the 200-free relay and 1:37.98 in the 200 medley relay.
On the women’s side, La Salle’s 400 medley relay of Jessica Carbin, Elizabeth Jordan, Jessica Simunek and Holly Biro finished first (4:00.68). The Explorer 200-free relay team of Jordan, Alex Stoddart, Katie Snee and Biro took second in the event (1:40.35).
Jordan would go on to win the 100-breast (1:06.29).
In the 50-free Biro and Snee went 2-3, finishing in 24.91 and 25.35, respectively. Biro also took second in the 100-free (53.80) and third in 200-free (1:57.32).
Adriana Correa picked up a victory in the 200-fly (2:10.81).
Simunek won the 100-fly (59.25) and placed second in the 200-breast (2:27.73).
In the backstroke Carbin won the 100 race (59.74) and finished second in the 200 (2:11.39).
Emily Heath finished second in both of her distance events, clocking a 5:04.85 in the 500-free and a 10:17.73 in the 1000-free.
In the 1-meter diving competition, the La Salle women’s squad went 2-3-4, with Laurie McLaughlin scoring a 211.10, Courtney Gress tallying a 188.55 and Shauna Hannings earning a 175.80. McLaughlin (207.45) and Gress (193.65) would go on to place second and third, respectively, in the 3-m competition as well.
On the men’s side, Jordan Baker finished fourth in the 3-m (268.10) and fifth in the 1-m (234.80).
The Explorers will next swim against Fordham on Saturday, January 22 at 1:00 p.m.
