Men's Swimming & Diving Defeats Fordham; Women Finish Behind Rams

BRONX, N.Y. - The men’s swimming and diving squad picked up an Atlantic-10 win against Fordham, while the women’s squad finished behind the Rams at the Messmore Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The men took the meet 156-87, while the women’s squad lost 160-74 to Fordham.

The Explorers stacked the distance events.  In the 1,000-free Zach Anderson (10:00.89), Greg Fischer (10:04.63) and Sean McCall (10:05.11) finished in the top three positions, respectively.

In the 500-free, it was Anderson (4:51.33), Fitzgerald (4:52.54) and McCall (4:55.16) who went 1-2-3.
McCall would go on to win the 200-fly (1:59.56), while teammates Joe Jung (1:59.57) and Fischer (2:02.85) placed second and third in the event.

Austin Thomas won the 50-free (21.85) and 100-free (48.26) for second straight week.   Kyle Goan came in second in the 50-free (22.05) and Dave Derr placed third in the 100-free (49.43).

Blase Szyszko won the 200-breast in 2:10.51.

Brian Batson took second in the 200-free (1:46.39), while Fitzgerald finished third in the same event (1:47.00).

Edward Carnes finished second in 200-back (1:56.35) and Tom Lawrie placed third in 200-IM (2:00.69), finishing three-tenths of a second out of the second position.

The men’s 400-m relay squad won the event in 3:31.09, beating out the Fordham squad by less than a second.

La Salle dominated Fordham in the diving competition.  Jordan Baker won the 1-meter dive (268.58), while Robert Freeling placed second (236.25) and Tyler Rieker took third (218.10).  The 3-m dive saw Baker (289.13), Rieker (237.98) and Freeling (209.33) take the top three positions.

On the women’s side, Elizabeth Jordan placed second in 200-IM (2:12.70) and third in the 100-free (54.57).

Emily Heath finished the 1,000 free in 10:23.36 to place second.  She also took second in the 500-free (5:08.13) and 200-breast (2:29.47).

Holly Biro placed third in the 50-free (23.35), Adriana Correa took third in the 200-fly (2:12.38) and Jess Carbin also notched a third place performance in the 200-back (2:11.53).

The Explorers won the 400-free relay (3:42.58).

On the diving board, Laurie McLaughlin picked up second place in the 3-meter competition (241.88).

The Explorers will return home for their second of three meets at Kirk Pool this season.  They will face Loyola at 1:00 p.m. and it will be the senior day celebration for La Salle.
