The women’s basketball team will face Charlotte at Tom Gola Arena on Wednesday in a contest that has been tabbed a WBCA Pink Zone game.

The Pink Zone is an initiative began by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association in 2007 to raise breast cancer awareness.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to support the cause. To support breast cancer research, ribbons will be on sale during the game. All proceeds will benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

The Explorers, who are close to locking up an Atlantic 10 Tournament spot, have won two of their last three contests.

They are paced by senior Ashley Gale’s 18.5 points per game, which is good for third in the conference and 28th in Division I.

Freshman Jess Koci leads the team in rebounding and her 7.7 boards per game rank fifth in the A-10.

The 49ers enter the contest on a school record nine-game road winning streak.  They have not lost on the road since November 15, 2010, when Charlotte fell to Florida in Gainesville.

Shannon McCallum’s 12 points per game lead a balanced Charlotte attack that boasts three double-figure scorers.

The Explorers have only won one game in five tries against Charlotte, a 71-62 victory on February 22, 2007.
