PHILADELPHIA, PA - With the 2011 baseball season on the horizon, one of the standouts from years past heard his name called by the professional ranks last week and will be continuing his career at the next level.
Former La Salle OF John Malloy has been signed by the Florence Freedom of the Frontier League and will report to camp in May.
"I'm excited to get my opportunity to play at the next level," Malloy said. "After I didn't get signed last year following the season, I didn't know if I was going to get the chance to play any more. I'm happy that I got my foot in the door."
Malloy sits atop the all-time La Salle hits list with 275 knocks over his four-year career. The Fairless Hills, PA native also is the all-time at bats (846) and doubles (59) leader in La Salle baseball history.
The outfielder started all 54 games for the Explorers last season and batted .325 with four home runs and 41 RBI.
The Florence Freedom are a non-affiliated independent league team based in Florence, KY, just across the Ohio state line and a short drive from Cincinnati. The Freedom open the season on May 20 against the Evansville Otters. To view Florence's homepage, visit www.florencefreedom.com.
