Swimming & Diving Sits In Fourth At A-10 Champs; Explorers Break Three School Records

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The men’s and women’s swimming & diving squads broke three school records combined and Laurie McLaughlin placed fifth in the 1-meter diving competition to position both teams in fourth place after the first day of competition at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championships.

The men earned 62 points. Defending champ Massachusetts is in the lead with 80 points.

The La Salle women earned 84 points on the evening.  Fordham sits in first with 111 points.

The 200 medley relay team of Dan Fitzgerald, Blase Szyszko, Charlie Zettel and Austin Thomas placed second, clocking in at 1:30.51 to break the school record of 1:31.89 set in 2009.

The team of Fitzgerald, Brian Batson, Zach Anderson and Greg Fischer took fifth in the 800-free relay (6:50.51).

On the women’s side, Jessica Carbin, Elizabeth Jordan, Jessica Simunek and Holly Biro swam a 1:44.31 to place fourth in the event and break the school record of 1:44.95 set in 2009.

The women’s 800-free relay team of Biro, Jordan, Adriana Correa and Emily Heath also broke a school record, shaving nearly four seconds off of the time after finishing in 7:32.25.  The Explorers placed fifth in the event.
 
McLaughlin took fifth in the 1-m diving competition after scoring a 215.60.
