FARMVILLE, VA - Week one of the NCAA baseball season is in the books as the La Salle hardballers continue the 2011 campaign this weekend with a four-game series at Longwood.
The Explorers (0-2) are coming off a tough early-season road trip on the west coast at UC-Santa Barbara.
After rain and poor field conditions halted play on Friday and Saturday, La Salle was swept in a double-header on Sunday and will look for their first victories of the young season this weekend against Longwood.
The Lancers (2-2) were blown out on Wednesday in a mid-week non-conference matchup against George Mason. Longwood needed four pitchers to get through the game in a 12-5 loss to the Patriots at home.
Friday's series-opener will begin at 3 p.m. with Saturday's doubleheader scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch. The first game of the double-header will be a nine-inning affair with the second game of the twin-bill scheduled for just seven frames.
Sunday's series finale will begin at noon.
Junior Jon Gyles (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks West) had a solid series last wekeend against the Gauchos going 3-for-8 with a team-high two RBI.
Sohpomore Dan Klem (Allentown, PA/Parkland HS) also went 3-for-8 with a run, a doulbe and an RBI in the series against UCSB.
On the mound, Pat Christensen showed no signs of a sophomore slump, pitching the final 2.1 innings in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader and allowed no runs and one hit with no walks and three strikeouts.
