Swimming & Diving Has Strong Showing On Day Three Of A-10 Championships

BUFFALO, N.Y. - After three days of competition at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving championships, the men’s squad sits in third place, while the women are in fourth.

The men have 321 points, while Massachusetts is in first with 491.5 points.

The women’s team earned 233.5 points. Richmond leads the field with 529 points.

In the Friday night finals, Laurie McLaughlin placed fourth in the 3-meter dive (236.85), while Courtney Gress took eighth in the same event (201.90).

In the men’s 100-breast, Blase Szyszko took the silver, clocking in at 56.65.

La Salle had a strong showing in the 100-fly, with Edward Carnes finishing third (49.66), Austin Thomas in fifth (49.77) and Charlie Zettel in seventh (50.40).  Dave Derr took 16th (52.01).

The Explorers also stacked three swimmers in the 100-back, as Derr (52.05), Dan Fitzgerald (52.20) and Carnes clocked in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

In the 400-IM, Tom Lawrie took ninth (4:04.25), Joe Jung was tenth (4:06.45) and Robby Gravel placed 12th (4:08.53).

Zach Anderson clocked in seventh in the 200-free (1:42.06), while Sean McCall finished 12th (1:43.42).

The men’s 400-medley relay of Fitzgerald, Szyszko, Carnes and Thomas combined for a fourth-place finish (3:23.43).

On the women’s side, Jessica Carbin was sixth in the 100-back (57.38) and Alex Stoddart took 15th (58.50).

Jessica Simunek clocked in sixth in the 100-breast (1:05.45) and also took ninth in the 100-fly (56.77), breaking the La Salle record held by Marlana Root (57.38) since 2002.

The women’s 400-medley relay was disqualified.

The final day of the championships will begin Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. with preliminaries.  The event finals will follow at 6:30 p.m.  Live results can be found here.
