Weingarten Receives Postgraduate Scholarship From I-AAA Athletic Directors Association; Also On Scholar-Athlete Team

PHILADELPHIA - La Salle senior men's basketball player Steve Weingarten has been awarded a postgraduate scholarship from the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association, the organization announced today. Weingarten was also honored on the I-AAA National Scholar-Athlete team for the second straight season.

Weingarten will receive $5,000 towards postgraduate studies and will be presented with his award during the Association's annual membership meeting being held in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Convention, being held at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Fla., June 16-18.

Basketball players from all Division I-AAA ADA member institutions are eligible for these prestigious awards. Each of the nominees was required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletics credentials.

Weingarten was named the 2011 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year this season and carries a 3.86 GPA as a dual major in history and American studies. He has been a two-time CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District First Team selection and also received Academic All-Atlantic 10 honors this winter.

On Thursday evening, he was honored with La Salle's Academic Excellence Award, presented to the graduating student-athlete with the highest GPA.

Belmont's Mick Hedgepeth received the I-AAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
