La Salle Athletics Congratulates Graduates; Commencement On Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - A total of 59 student-athletes will participate in the 148th annual La Salle University Commencement ceremony on Sunday at McCarthy Stadium.

Kelly O'Steen (Women's Soccer) will receive a departmental award from the Speech/Language/Hearing Department and Steve Weingarten (Men's Basketball) will receive the Academic Excellence Award for Athletics. Matt Sheehan (Men's Basketball) will be carrying the cross in the procession at the Baccalaureate Mass.

The graduation highlighted another outstanding year in the classroom for La Salle student-athletes. The Explorers boast two Atlantic 10 Student-Athletes of the Year, two national scholar All-Americans, one Academic All-American, multiple Academic All-Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area selections and several teams recognized by their coaches organizations for academic success.

At the year-end student-athlete banquet, senior men's soccer player Ryan Richter and senior swimmer Holly Biro were named the Male and Female Scholar Athletes of the Year, respectively. Also receiving awards were senior swimmer Kieran Edling, who received the De La Salle Community Service Award; and Steve Helm, who received the Joseph E. Crowley award for service to the department by a non-student-athlete.

The men's swimming and diving team earned the top GPA for a men's team and the field hockey team had the top GPA for a women's team in the spring of 2010. In the fall of 2010, the men's tennis and women's soccer teams had the top GPA, respectively.

The following student-athletes will graduate on Sunday.
