Women's Water Polo Collects All Three MAAC Weekly Awards

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The La Salle women's water polo program collected all three of the weekly Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Awards as freshman attacker Nadya Azzopardi was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week and MAAC Rookie of the Week, and junior goalkeeper Lily Kirby earned MAAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Azzopardi earned both honors for the first time in her career after totaling 10 goals and three assists in victories against Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 21 and LIU on Feb. 22.

In the win against Mount St. Mary's, Azzopardi erupted for eight goals to break the program's single-game goals record previously held by Explorer great Francesca Co' (seven goals - six times).

Azzopardi netted four goals in each half, including three in the second quarter. She also added two assists and fired 10 shots to pace the attack.

In the 13-8 win against LIU, she tallied two goals and one assist, bringing her season total to 47 goals and 21 assists in 14 games.

Kirby also received the award for the first time this season after making 29 total saves in the 2-0 weekend for the Explorers.

Against Mount St. Mary's, Kirby turned aside 13 shots and added a steal to anchor the back line.

Kirby capped her weekend with 16 saves and two assists in the victory against LIU.

Kirby has made at least 16 saves in three different games this season, including a program record 19 in the season opener against Iona on Feb. 7.

She has made 588 saves in her career and needs 50 more to become the program's all-time career leader in saves.
