Jasmine Alston has been named the La Salle Student-Athlete of the Week following her tremendous performance in a 3-0 week for the Explorer women's basketball team. Alston averaged 9.7 ppg on the week, which included a career-high 18 points in the Explorers' win over Towson in the LIU Turkey Classic. She went 11-for-14 from the free throw line on the week, and is hitting 81.3 percent for the season.
Even more so, Alston's defense was the story of the week. The sophomore recorded a career-high eight steals in the win over LIU Brooklyn in the Turkey Classic opener, the most for an Explorer in at least five years. She added four steals against the Tigers to average 6.0 steals per game in the Thanksgiving tournament. The 5'9 guard also recorded three blocked shots last week and dished out 3.0 assists per game.
Alston was named to the LIU Turkey Classic All-Tournament Team. She helped the squad tie for first place in the tournament with a 2-0 record, as the Long Island City, N.Y., native was playing in front of her hometown crowd.
Alston leads the Atlantic 10 by far in steals per game, averaging 3.8 on the season so far. In comparison, the second ranked player in the league has 2.5 steals per game. She is also ranked in the top 10 in the league in assists (4.0 apg), free throw percentage (81.3%), and blocked shots (1.3 bpg).
