Late La Salle Goals Give Explorers Victory

Oct. 12, 2007

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Shutout for the first 68 minutes of the contest, the La Salle University Women's Soccer team scored five goals in a 20-minute span, including three in a 1:33 stretch, to erase a one-goal deficit twice and register a 5-2 victory over the visiting Saint Joseph's Hawks in Atlantic 10 Soccer action at McCarthy Stadium, Friday night.

Saint Joseph's (2-11-0, 0-5-0 A-10) got on the board early - just 3:39 into the match - when Carly Salter headed home her third goal of the season off a corner kick by Shannon Osborn. The rest of the first half saw La Salle outshoot the Hawks 15-3, but none of those could find the back of the net.

It was not until the 69th minute that the Explorers finally broke through on the scoreboard - in more ways than one. They had been shut out in their first three A-10 contests, and it was an own goal that finally ended the drought. Dana Giordano's cross toward the Hawk goal was unintentionally headed by a defender into the net.

However, it took Saint Joseph's just 10 minutes to answer, this time Osborn taking a pass from Laura Adams - and as La Salle goalie Melissa Sanger came out to stop the run - Osborn poked the ball past to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

Just three minutes later, the Explorers knotted the game back up when Traci DePasquale knocked in a corner kick by Giordano at the 82nd minute, for her eighth tally of the season.

La Salle (7-6-0, 1-3-0 A-10), who held a 26-9 advantage in shots - 15-6 on goal, would continue to attack and at the 87:03 mark, Alex Conley took a pass from Carissa Philips on the left side of the box and beat Hawk goalie Megan Bastianelli to the near post for her second of the year - and her second game-winner as well.

Kristin Hextall, who was off to a hot start with seven goals in eight games, but was without one in the last four, finally found the back of the net after Kim Lisun found her on a breakaway. Her 30-yard strike at 87:40 was her team-tying eighth of the season, 26th of her career - third all-time, and her 67th career point - second all-time.

Sara Copare sealed the game with her first tally of the season at the 88:36 mark.

Sanger won her second game of the season in net, making three saves, while Bastianelli kept the Hawks in the game as long as she could with 10 saves.

La Salle now takes on Temple, Sunday at McCarthy Stadium with a 1 PM kickoff.
