Explorers Can't Overcome Slow Start In Loss to Duquesne

Oct. 13, 2007

Box Score

Erin Sullivan posted a double-double and Carly Conlon dished out a team-high 32 assists, but it wasn't enough to halt La Salle's losing skid, as the Explorers fell 3-0 to Duquesne on Saturday afternoon.

Sullivan led La Salle with 10 kills, while Jackie Kushman and Christa Dominick each had nine. Sullivan and Kushman each tallied 14 digs a piece.

Duquesne came out and threatened to blow away the Explorers from the start. Game one belonged to the Dukes, who coasted to a 30-12 win. In the game, Duquesne recorded a .406 hitting percentage, while La Salle struggled mightily, hitting -.091.

The two teams battled down to the wire in game number two, which tested the nerves of the players and fans alike. A kill from Amy McKeon gave La Salle a 28-27 lead. The Dukes would then battle back, going ahead 29-28. The Explorers refused to go without a fight, as Danielle DiMarco's kill evened the score at 29-29. The teams would then trade points, as neither side could capitalize on their advantages.

La Salle appeared to take a 33-32 edge; however, a controversial call was reversed in favor of Duquesne, as they were awarded the point and the lead. The Explorers would hold strong though, as the trading of points would continue until Duquesne finally ended the marathon game, winning 39-37.

The home team desperately tried to force a fourth game, but Duquesne would prevail, 30-25.

Jenni Gross led the Dukes with 14 kills while hitting .429 for the match. Kristin Garnett notched a game-high 46 assists while Amy Palko led all players with 20 digs.

La Salle looks to get their season back on track this Tuesday, when they host city-rival Penn at Tom Gola Arena at 6:00 p.m.
