Another Tough Loss for the Explorers

Oct. 14, 2007

Box Score

Jess Weidner scored on a breakaway two and a half minutes into overtime to lift Richmond to a 1-0 win over La Salle on Sunday.

It was the fourth overtime loss this year for the Explorers (8-9, 1-3), who fell under .500 for the first time this season.

Ellen Axelsen recorded three saves on the day, while the Explorer defense was strong throughout, but again it was their offense that struggled. La Salle, who had been averaging over two goals per contest, has now scored just one in their last three games.

The two teams battled to a 0-0 draw after the first 70 minutes. The Explorers had their chances to forge ahead in the second half, as they outshot Richmond 10-4 in the period. However, Richmond's Becca Weaver had five saves to preserve the deadlock.

Weaver came into the game five minutes into the second half, replacing Jacki Raithel, who had started for the Spiders.

The decisive goal came when Megan Thompson streaked down the field and found Weidner, who tapped it in for her second goal of the season.

The Explorers had seven penalty corners to Richmond's three, while the Spiders led in shots, 13-12.

La Salle looks to stop the bleeding when they head down Broad Street on Friday to face off against Temple. The action gets underway at 3:00 p.m.
