Explorers Shut Out by Saint Joseph's

Oct. 21, 2007

Box Score

On an unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field, the La Salle field hockey team saw their losing streak reach five games in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Saint Joseph's.

The loss drops the Explorers to 8-11 on the season and 1-5 in Atlantic 10 Conference play.

The Hawks' Marisa Pizzi broke a scoreless tie in the 25th minute, scoring off of an assist from Jen Wrublesky. Pizzi's goal gave St. Joe's a 1-0 lead heading into intermission.

The Explorers opened play in the second half well within striking distance. However, they couldn't get anything going on offense. The Hawks would take advantage, as Krista Bordogna would stretch the St. Joe's lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute, tapping in a shot off of Wrublesky's feed.

The intensity levels rose on both sides, as the two rivals battled it out over the final minutes of the game. The physicality would result in green cards for both teams. St. Joe's was forced to play the final five minutes shorthanded after Brianne Miller received a yellow card late in the contest.

La Salle desperately tried to get on the board, as Kara Harpel, Adrianna Lalli and Maria Allegretto all had shots on goal in the final minutes. Unfortunately, Hawk goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer made a flurry of saves to keep the Explorers off the board and preserve the shutout.

For La Salle, Ellen Axelsen finished the game with two saves.

The two teams each recorded nine shots on the afternoon. La Salle had two penalty corners to the Hawks' three.

La Salle closes out the season this Saturday when they host West Chester on Senior Day at Hank DeVincent Field. Senior Explorers Colleen Nesbitt and Axelsen will be honored prior to the start of the game for their four years wearing the blue and gold. Game time is at 12:00 p.m.
