PHILADELPHIA, PA - With just over three minutes remaining in the first sudden-death overtime, senior Joe Heavey (Coatesville, PA/Devon Prep) took a ball from Brian Barry (Arnold, MD/Archbishop Spalding), raced down the left side and stroked a low shot passed Xavier (5-9, 1-3) keeper Adam Sokolowski to give the Explorers (3-8, 1-2) their first Atlantic 10 win of the season with a 2-1 decision on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
The goal was Heavey's second of the season. Barry assisted on both goals.
After a scoreless first half the Explorers struck first at the 54:45 mark when Barry launched a perfect corner kick which Jim Davis (Pittsgrove, PA/A.P. Schalick) put a head on and drove it onto the net.
Xavier responded in less than 18 minutes with a flurry of activity around the Explorer net. Just as La Salle keeper Andrew Bernhard (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) had turned away a shot at point blank range from Brandon Bucher, a rebound found its way to El-Hadji Dieng who squared up and deposited the game-tying goal.
Bernhard made 12 saves on 18 shots while the Musketeers' Sokolowski faced 20 shots but only five on net - two of which hit pay dirt.
The Explorers return to action in Atlantic 10 play Friday night at 7:30 when they host Duquesne at McCarthy Stadium.
