Explorers Lose on a Long Shot; 10-7

Oct. 27, 2007

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Assumption College's (2-7) Jon Eisele nailed a season-high 49-yard field goal with just two minutes and two second remaining to give the Greyhounds a three-point lead which they would preserve for 10-7 victory over the La Salle University Explorers (2-7) on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.

The kick came just four minutes after an Explorer offense, which sputtered much of the afternoon, put together a 59-yard drive that ended when Dave Macknet (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) scored his second touchdown of the season by diving over the pile on a fourth and goal from six inches out.  The dive came one play after Assumption had apparently stopped the Explorers who quick-snapped out of a time-out on fourth down but saw quarterback Joe Procopio (Calvert, MD/Calvert) thrown for a loss.  An offsides call on the Greyhounds gave the Explorers second life.

Assumption scored the first touchdown of the game two plays after freshman Deric Dudinski (Sterling, VA/Park View) lost a fumble on the La Salle 37-yard line.  On the drive Taylor Humphrey struck tight-end Eric Schindler on a 36-yard pass.  Herb Woodard ran in on the next play.

Assumption winning drive covered 48 yards on eight plays and was set up on a 43-yard reception by Jake Beers .  A few plays later Beers was called for offensive pass interference on a would-be touchdown catch.  Eisele had missed from 35 yards and had a 23-yard attempt blocked earlier in the game.

The Explorer offense had amassed just 120 yards of total offense prior to their touchdown score which was propelled largely by the senior Procopio who scrambled for several first downs and finished as the game's leading rusher with 95 yards on 11 carries after relieving start Steve Panasuk.

Both teams combined for eight turnovers in the game.

Defensively the Explorers were keyed by Casey Walsh (Ocean City, MD/Decatur) who had eight tackles, deflected a pass which was intercepted by fellow linebacker Jake Cornely (Voorhess, NJ/Eastern Regional) and blocked an Eisele field goal attempt.

The Explorers are back on the road next week with another MAAC Football League contest at Marist at 7:00 PM
