AMHERST, MA - The La Salle field hockey team failed in its attempt to build on a two-game winning streak, falling to Massachusetts by a 2-0 score on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Explorers to 8-7 on the year and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10.
La Salle was dominated in all aspects, only recording three shots to the Minutewomen's 16. UMass also totaled nine penalty corners to the Explorers' one.
Ellen Axelsen turned away seven UMass shots on the afternoon.
Maria Allegretto had a chance to give La Salle the lead early in the contest, but her shot was saved by UMass goalkeeper Becky Letourneau. It was the first of two saves for Letourneau in the contest.
Jaime Bourazeris gave the Minutewomen a 1-0 lead in the fourteenth minute off of a penalty corner. Nicole Phelan would tack on an additional goal late in the game to ensure the win for UMass.
The Explorers return home this Friday when they host Saint Louis at DeVincent Field. Game time is at 4 p.m.
