Baltimore, MD - With one minute and 33 seconds to play the La Salle University Explorers trailed Morgan State 87-67 but went on a frenzied 20-6 run which fell short in a 93-87 defeat on Saturday evening at Hill Fieldhouse.
The Explorers (3-4) led 29-21 at the 7:45 PM mark of the first half but the Bears (5-4) closed out the period on a 19-3 roll and would never trail again to even the all-time series at one game apiece.
Darnell Harris (St. Frances/Baltimore, MD) knocked down six three-pointers in the second half, four of which came in the final minute and fifty seconds of play, after a first half where he was held to just three points on 1-3 shooting.
Harris was out dueled, however, by high school teammate Reggie Holmes who scored 26 points and made 14 of 16 free throws including his final 11 attempts of the game. He was a perfect 10 for 10 from the stripe in the game's final two minutes.
The Explorers went 8 for 16 from the charity stripe and were out-rebounded 34-31while committing 17 turnovers.
Yves Mekongo Mbala (Elizabeth, NJ/St. Patrick's) recorded the team's second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Ruben Guillandeaux (Brooklyn, NY/St. Patrick's) scored a dozen in his second game back after missing the first five games of the season with bursitis in his wrist.
Next up for the Explorers is the first game of the San Juan Shootout on Wednesday, December 18th with a 3:00 PM (EST) tip-off against host University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez.
