Mid-Game Lull Dooms Explorers in 86-74 Loss to George Washington

Feb. 24, 2007

Final Stats

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle University Explorers (10-18, 3-11) went a span of ten minutes and 19 seconds across the two halves without a field goal to help George Washington (18-8, 9-5) build a 15-point lead at halftime before taking the 86-74 victory on Saturday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena.

The Explorers had four players score 11 or more points including Ruben Guillandeaux' (Brooklyn, NY/St. Patrick's) team-high 15 points but GW had a pair of players register a double-doubles including Carl Elliott's 16 points and 11 rebounds and Dokun Akinbade's 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Explorers, who scored first on a dynamic two-handed slam from freshman Rodney Green (Philadelphia, PA/Prep Charter), shot just 25% from the field in the first half (6-24) while the Colonials connected on 17 of 31 attempts (54.8%).  Despite the cold shooting, Mike St. John (Northboro, MA/River School) brought his team within three points, 22-19, when he nailed a three-pointer with 9.25 remaining. The Explorers would not score again until Darnell Harris' (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances) three-pointer fell in just 54 seconds into the second half.

The Colonials led by as many as 17 but the Explorers outscored their guests by three points in the second half and were able to cut the GW led to seven points on two occasions but could come no closer in the loss.

Local product Maureece Rice (Philadelphia, PA/Strawberry Mansion) led all scorers with 21 points.

The Explorers have two games remaining in the season beginning with Wednesday's final road game of the season at Massachusetts.  The game will tip-off at 7:00 PM.  Subscribers to both school's CSTV All-Access will be able to view the game via UMass' video stream.
