PHILADELPHIA, PA - Coming off a victory over Colgate just three days ago, the
La Salle Explorers lacrosse team recorded their first loss of the season at the Drexel Dragons. The Explorers came up short by a score of 17-6 at Vidas Field. Drexel evened its record at 1-1 when La Salle dropped to 1-1.
Drexel jumped out to an early 4-0 before La Salle's Emily Bonczek snapped the Explorers' drought by scoring an unassisted goal with 17:21 remaining in the first half. The Dragons answered with Kerry Kelly's third goal of the afternoon off a pass from Katie Bradley. Bradley had already scored a goal and assisted on another goal.
At the 14:09 mark of the game, freshman Jillian Davis tallied her first collegiate goal to bring the score to 5-2 advantage Drexel. The Dragons scored next just 27 seconds later as Emily Hoesch netted her second game. The teams traded the next two goals as Bonczek scored again with 9:37 to go in the half followed by Nicole Iacono's goal assisted by Kimberly Kabernagel.
With score standing at 7-3, Hoesch scored Drexel's next goal with 6:08 to play, followed by back-to-back goals by Jessica Bill at the 24:55 and 27:09 marks to close out the first half scoring.
In the second half, saw Bonczek document a hat trick just 1:46 into the period. Drexel went on an offensive surge scoring five straight goals between the 33:50 and 40:25 marks to extend the Dragons' lead 19-4.
Bonczek posted her fourth and final goal with 13:37 to play and Drexel answered with two additional goals before La Salle senior Catie Borneman closed out all scoring with 21 seconds to play, bringing the final score to 17-6.
La Salle goalkeeper Chantelle McCormick played the first 30 minutes and faced 18 shots and recorded eight saves. In the second half, Brittany Friedrich took over the goalkeeping duties and faced 16 shots while recording five saves. For Drexel, Lauren LaBella competed for the first 46:55 and earned seven saves before Rachel Behrndt took over to log the last 13:05 of play.
