Softball Sweeps George Washington to start off 2-0 in the Atlantic 10

March 22, 2007

Final Stats

PHILADELPHIA, PA - With the first game tied 1-1 in the first inning, the Explorers finally broke out in the fourth with a two RBI homerun from senior Laura Dezolt.  That would be the rest of the scoring in game one, as DeZolt held the Colonials to just four hits and struck out six batters on the mound.

Both teams struck early in the second game.  GW's Tori Sensi brought in an RBI in the fourth at bat of the game, but the Explorers were there to answer right back when DeZolt got her second homerun of the day, this time batting in Vinnie Caputo and Kelli Curcio after both girls walked onto base.

La Salle held the Colonials to no runs in the second inning after catching freshman Amanda Holst stealing, striking out the next batter and snuffing out a groundball.  The Explorers' half of the inning would prove much more fruitful, when Curcio brought in Megan Berry off her first homerun of the season.  Michelle Sullivan then doubled three plays later, bringing in Mary Pat Conville to make it a 6-0 lead.

Conville then got her second single of the game in the bottom of the third, this time bringing in Alicia De La Rosa and Jen Street after hitting a nice ball up the middle to bat in the two final La Salle runs at the bottom of the third.

After loading the bases and some rough fielding by the Explorers, the Colonials quickly shortened the lead to 8-6 in the fourth inning.  Freshman pitcher Laura Beth McCreesh stepped up, however, as she shut down GW for the rest of the innings and saved the game.  She closed out her three innings with one hit and four strikeouts.

The girls are now 5-7 and 2-0 in the Atlantic 10.  They go on the road Friday to play the postponed doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore.  Those games are scheduled for 2:00 and 4:00PM on March 23rd.
