Explorers Return from Stanford Invitational with NCAA Qualifications and a New School Record

April 1, 2007

Palo Alto, CA -- The La Salle University Track and Field teams competed at the Stanford Invitational and had a banner weekend with a new school record set and three runners either qualifying for the NCAA National and Regional Championships outright or provisionally.

Sean Quigley (Braintree, MA/Archbishop Williams) will make it a clean sweep in his senior year by competing in all three NCAA Championships (Cross Country/Indoor/Outdoor) after qualifying for the 10K with a school record time of 28.29.61.  The time placed him 10th in the event (sixth among collegiate competitors), also qualifies him for the USA Track and Field Championships and makes him a provisional qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Rachel Papin (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert) has earned NCAA Provisional Qualifier status# again with her 33.53.75 performance in the 10K.  She finished 15th out of 27 runners in the event (11th among collegians) and was just one minute and 22 seconds off of the winning pace.  Her performance qualifies her for the ECAC Championships later this season.

Earning a spot in the NCAA Regional Championships* is John Butler (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff) who posted a time of 14.09.26 in the 5k event.  The NCAA Regionals will be held May 25 and 26 in at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL.  Souderton's Joseph Dare (Souderton High) also earned IC4A qualification in the event with an effort of 14.16.

Also qualifying for the ECAC Championships were Danielle Schopf (Glenolden, PA/Cardinal O'Hara) and Christa Plummer (Quakertown, PA/Palisades) who posted times of 17.02.18 and 17.07.11 respectively in the 5k.

The IC4A and ECAC Championships will be held on May 11th at Princeton University.

*certain NCAA events such as the 10k and the decathlon provide automatic qualification for the NCAA Championships (see Papin/Quigley) whereas all other events require qualification at the regional level
