Final Stats
PHILADELPHIA, PA - In a driving rain, the La Salle Explorers hosted the Duquesne Dukes at McCarthy Stadium on Sunday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 conference match-up. Despite three goals each from seniors Catie Borneman and Tiffany Grossi, the Explorers came up short in a 10-8 victory for Duquesne. The Explorers drop to 4-7 (0-3) for the season, while the Dukes improve to 7-6 (2-1).
Duquesn'e Sarah Cates got the scoring started just 53 seconds into the contest and at the 2:15 mark, Courtney Tamasistis took a pass from Kathleen McNish to put the Dukes up 2-0.
Grossi drove to the net to put the Explorers on the board at the 3:13 mark, followed by freshman Stefany McKee's free position shot at 4:34 to tie the game at 2-2. Borneman recorded her first goal of the game unassisted with 20:35 to play in the half to give the Explorers a 3-2 lead.
The Explorers held that lead for almost four minutes before Duquesne's Kathleen McNish scored with the help of Meghan Frederick at the 13:57 mark to tie the game again at 3-3. Meg Cloutman gave the Dukes the go-ahead goal with 14:37 to play in the half as McNish assisted on her second of five goals in the contest. Duquesne scored the next two goals to go up 6-3.
With less than four minutes to go in the half, the Explorers went on the attack as freshman Alie Venuti connected with Jillian Davis to halt the Dukes scoring run. Grossi took the next pass from Davis with just 17 seconds to play in the period to narrow the Dukes halftime lead to one at 6-5.
After the shortened five minute halftime, the Dukes got back to scoring netting the first two goals of the half by Sarah Carson (33:43) and Sarah Cates (39:26). Grossi broke up the Dukes scoring with another unassisted goal with 16:36 to play in the game. Cates scored next for Duquesne with the help of Courtney Tamasitis at tthe 46:01 mark before Tamasitis went the distance and scored with the help of McNish with 10:34 to play.
Borneman wrapped up the scoring with back-to-back goals at 51:53 and 56:50 to bring the final score to 10-8.
Brittany Friedrich controlled the net for the Explorers, facing 21 shots and earning five saves. Duquesne's Caitlin Carducci logged 60 minutes in the net and faced 24 shots while recording nine saves.
Kelly Heiss led the Explorers with five ground balls and Venuti contributed three.
The Explorers will be back in action on Friday, April 20th when they host rival Saint Joseph's at McCarthy Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
