Errors Cost Explorers in 6-5 Loss to Massachusetts

April 20, 2007

Box Score

AMHERST, MA - The La Salle University Baseball team committed four errors which directly led to six unearned runs and cost the Explorers in a 6-5 loss to Massachusetts in the first game of a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series at Earl Lorden Field, Friday.

Massachusetts (10-16, 5-8 A-10) jumped out to a four-run lead after three innings, scoring an unearned run in the first on a Bryan Adamski sacrifice fly, and three in the third, the big blow a two-run home run by Adamski.

The Explorers cut that deficit to 4-1 on an RBI single by TJ Chism plating John Rickards; however a double play with first and third ended any other threat in the fourth.

The Minutemen responded with two more unearned runs in the bottom of the frame, as Andy Tuetken scored on an error and Jim Cassidy hit a sac fly to bring home Travis Munsey.

La Salle starter Dan Waters suffered the loss, despite scattering just four hits and striking out five batters in six innings of work. The six unearned runs led to his fourth loss of the season and he is now 4-4.

Chism pitched the final two innings, getting two Ks while not allowing a hit. In fact, the Explorers pitching staff did not allow a hit after the third inning.

Massachusetts starter Chris Lloyd was cruising through six innings, allowing just the one earned run on three hits with five strikeouts. However, the Explorers chased him in the seventh as the first four batters reached base.

Chism drew a walk to lead off the inning, which was followed by a Billy Kern double and a two-RBI single from Kevin Jones. Brian Meagher singled to set up first and second and the Minutemen went to their pen.

Adamski came in for relief and got the first out of the inning. But Chris Crawford loaded the bases with a single to right and Rich Prall drove in a run with a sac fly. Meagher scored on an error to make it a one-run game before Adamski ended the inning with a grounder.

In the eighth, it looked as if La Salle tied the game, but Chism's home run ball was ruled foul, and Adamski pitched a perfect eighth and ninth to pick up his second save of the season. Lloyd improved his record to 3-3 with the victory.

La Salle (13-19, 5-8 A-10) will continue the three-game set with Massachusetts, Saturday with a 1:00 PM start.
