April 22, 2007

Final Stats

RICHMOND, VA - After five straight home contests, the La Salle Explorer lacrosse team took to the road to take on the Richmond Spiders at First Market Stadium.  The Explorers netted the first goal of the day, but the Spiders claimed a 17-5 victory on Sunday afternoon.  The Explorers stand at 4-9 (0-5) overall, while the Spiers improved to 10-5 (4-1) overall.

Youth and experience paired up for the Explorers first goal of the contest when freshman Jillian Davis connected with senior Tiffany Grossi just 1:56 into the game for La Salle's first goal of the day.

La Salle's lead was short lived, when Mandy Friend took advantage of a La Salle foul to score a free position goal just 44 seconds after Davis' goal.  With the score tied at 1-1, the Spiders Morghan Vahue took a pass from Fried to take the lead at 2-1.  Friend was relentless, scoring back-to-back goals at 4:47 and 5:54 to extend the Spiders' lead to 4-1.  Richmond did not slow down their offense the rest of the half, scoring the next five goals to take an 11-1 laed into halftime.

After the break, the Explorers' Emily Bonczek found the net to give the Explorers just their second goal of the game with 27:15 remaining.  Richmond responded with Jenna Hubbard's first goal, again assisted by Friend followed by Ashley Friend's third goal of the game with Hubbard's help.

With the score standing at 13-2, freshman Rachel Kilgore recorded her first collegiate goal in just her third appearance this season.  Kilgore's goal at the 42:08 mark brought the score to 13-3.  Richmond's Hubbard scored again at the 43:43 mark to break any hope of a La Salle scoring run.

La Salle senior Catie Borneman notched her 22nd goal of the season with 14:58 to play.  The Spiders answered Borneman's goal with a pair of goals from Lexie Marrocco and Erin Kennedy.

As time was winding down in the second half, Grossi posted the Explorers' final goal of the day with 3:36 to play before Richmond's Sarah Townsend closed out the socring with 1:58 to play to put the final score at 17-5.

La Salle goalkeeper Chantelle McCormick controlled the net the entire 60 minutes, facing 33 shots and recording nine saves.  Richmond's Jackie Swansburg took the first 46:11 of the game and faced eight shots while earning four saves.  In the last 13:49 of play, Erica Marrocco took over and also faced eight shots and tallied three saves.

Kilgore and Kaylan Billingsley posted La Salle's only two caused turnovers of the afternoon and two of the Explorers three ground balls of the day.
