April Showers Bring a Win and a Loss to Softball Team

April 25, 2007

Final Stats

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle Explorers (14-19, 6-7 A-10) split a soggy doubleheader with the Drexel Dragons (16-15) this afternoon.  Four Explorers walked away with RBIs on the day with a total of 14 hits in both games.

The rain did not keep the Dragons away in the first game.  After La Salle scored the leading run to go up 1-0 in the first, Drexel started things off with a solo homerun in the first at-bat of the second inning.  They continued to hit well through the inning, until Laura Dezolt struck out Molly Dacey looking, but not before the Dragons amassed a 5-1 lead.

The Explorers only managed one hit in the third inning of a single from Mary Pat Conville.  It produced no runs, however, and Drexel came out and scored another six in the third before DeZolt managed one of her five strikeouts in the first game to end the inning.

One last run by the Dragons was scored in the top of the fourth by a single from Carla Waldron to give Drexel their 12th run.  Kate Gulkis brought in Michelle Sullivan off of a ground out, but that would be the last run scored by the Explorers before the game ended in the bottom of the fifth.

DeZolt got her 25th hit of the season in the first inning of the second game, bringing in Alicia De La Rosa to score the first of three runs in that inning.  After Conville got on base from being hit by a pitch, she would round home on a wild pitch and score the second run, followed quickly by DeZolt, who scored off of a single from freshman Angelina Bisbiglia.  After today, Bisbiglia is second on the team with 15 RBIs.

Despite getting three hits in the second inning, the Dragons could not find home plate, and La Salle would go up 4-0 nothing in the bottom of the third when Bisbiglia earned her second RBI of the game off of a double, bringing in Sullivan for the score.

The Dragons scored their first and second runs of the second game off of a wild pitch in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth, but the Explorers put the game away in the bottom of that inning.  Megan Berry walked her way to homeplate with the bases loaded, and Sullivan singled shortly after to bring in Kelli Curcio.  Bisbiglia's third RBI of the game came right afterwards, when she also walked and gave La Salle their seventh run.

Two ground outs and a pop up from the Dragons were not enough to rally a comeback in the rainy weather, and the Explorers would end the game with a 7-2 win.

Next up the La Salle softball team will be holding Senior Day this Friday, April 27th, when they take on the Dayton Flyers at 3:00PM.
