PHILADELPHIA, PA - The La Salle Explorers (15-20, 7-8 A-10) held their annual Senior Day ceremony to honor the team's seniors before they played in their last home games as Explorers.
Laura Dezolt went out in style, as she pitched two complete games, striking out five batters and allowing five runs off of 13 hits. She also went 2-for-6 from the plate and brought in four RBIs.
The Explorers committed three of their five total errors from the first game in the second inning, allowing the Flyers to take advantage and score four runs, aided also by four stolen bases. Mary Pat Conville earned her 12th RBI in the third when she singled to left field and brought Kate Gulkis in for the initial La Salle score. Two Explorer fly balls and a ground out made quick work of the seventh inning, despite one of those flys coming from Laura Beth McCreesh, who earned an RBI when her foul out brought Conville in for the score.
Dayton got on the board first in the second game as well, but it was only an RBI single from Blair Crabtree before the Explorers closed the frame. La Salle again waited until the third inning to score, but this time it was three RBI double off the bat of DeZolt. That hit gave her 16 RBIs this year and put her in second place on the team for runs batted in.
One total hit from both teams encompassing the fourth and fifth innings left La Salle with a 3-1 lead going into the sixth inning. In an frame filled with three ground outs out of four batters, DeZolt again shined through when she belted out a solo homerun in the second at bat to give La Salle their fourth run and a little more breathing room. Dayton got three straight ground outs of their own in the top of the seventh, and that would end the game and the conference doubleheader.
The girls have just four more games left as they prepare to play Rhode Island on the road next weekend in a two-day series. The first of those games will start at 3:00PM in Kingston on Friday, May 4th.
