Davis Scores Hat Trick in Loss at Massachuetts

AMHERST, MA - In their final contest of the 2007, the La Salle Explorers lacrosse team posted a 19-8 loss at Massachusetts McGuirk Stadium Sunday afternoon.  Freshman Jillian Davis and Tiffany Grossi each led the Explorers with four points.  Davis netted a hat trick an assisted on a Grossi goal, while Grossi contributed a pair of goals and a pair of assists.  La Salle closes out the season with a 4-11 overall record and a 0-7 Atlantic 10 record.  The Minutewomen close out the regular season with an 8-9 overall record and a 3-4 conference mark.

The Minutewomen opened the game with a five-goal run, starting with the first goal at the 5:52 mark by Jeanette Villapiano and ending at 14:34 with a goal by Melynda Zwick assisted by Kristina Twichell. 

The Explorers snapped the UMass scoring run when Grossi notched her first goal of the day with 12:41 remaining in the half to put the score at 5-1.  The Minutewomen responded just over a minute later, when Zwick and Twichell paired up again.  Twichell then went solo to score UMass' seventh goal with 8:56 to play in the period.

La Salle's Erika Matthews netted an unassisted goal at the 21:49 mark to bring the score to 7-2.  Matthews' goal also proved to be the last of the period for the Explorers.

The Minutewomen went on to score three goals in the last eight minutes, including Meghan Reddy's goal with 1:44 remaining to put the half time score at 10-2.

After the break, Davis lit a spark in the Explorer offense, netting back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of the half, narrowing UMass' lead to 10-4.  The Explorers held the Minutewomen scoreless for almost ten minutes in the second half Holly Drown connected on a pass from Twichell to score her fourth goal of the contest at the 40:50 mark.  Down scored again at the 42:41 mark to put the score at 12-4. 

With the score sitting at 14-4, after UMass scored the next two goals, La Salle freshman Rachel Kilgore tallied her third goal of the season with 14:08 to play. 

The Minutewomen responded with two additional goals before Davis posted her third and final goal of the game with 6:43 to play.  The Explorers' Alie Venuti scored next at the 54:16 mark to put the score at 17-7.  Grossi put the final La Salle goal on the scoreboard with the help of Davis with 4:16 to play.

UMass' Samanath Sepulveda scored with 2:22 remaining and Kaitlyn Johnson pu goal 19 in the cage for the Minutewomen to put the final score at 19-8.

La Salle goalkeeper Brittany Friedrich added 60 minutes to her career totals along with 11 saves.  UMass placed Lauren McCarthy in goal for 51:41 of the game.  McCarthy allowed five goals and earned 10 saves before Jamie Whiteway checked in for the last 8:19, allowing three goals and contributing one save.

Today's contest marked the final collegiate game for seniors Catie Borneman, Tiffany Grossi and Brittany Friedrich who all leave the Explorers as career record holders in various categories.
