CINCINNATI, OH - The La Salle University Baseball team was held to just a pair of hits by Xavier's Michael Lucas as he shutout the Explorers for only the second time this season and helped the Musketeers complete the A-10 sweep of La Salle with a 5-0 victory, Sunday at Hayden Field.
Xavier (24-27, 15-9 A-10) started the game with three straight singles, the last was an RBI single by Jordan Wolf to score Adam Pasono.
La Salle starter Drew Gerhart then settled in allowing just one more hit - a solo home run to Robbie Kelley in the fourth - over the next five innings.
However, the Musketeers broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with three straight RBI hits - the last by Drew Schmidt - to increase their lead to 5-0.
There would be no late inning heroics this time for the Explorers, as Lucas retired the last 13 batters after Kevin Jones hit a two-out single in the fifth inning.
John Rickards broke up Lucas' no hitter in the fourth inning, but was picked off first, as Lucas faced just 29 batters and struck out eight of them. He improved to 3-6 this season, while Gerhart drops to 1-4.
La Salle (16-29, 8-16 A-10) has just four games left in its 2007 season. They will face St. Peter's, Tuesday at 3:30 PM in Jersey City, then travel to the Bronx to face Fordham in the last A-10 series for the Explorers, starting Thursday.
