PHILADELPHIA - La Salle University pitcher Dan Waters has picked up two more awards this week just a few days after one of his best pitching performances of his career in his final start in the Blue and Gold.

Waters picked up his second Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Pitcher of the Week honor in 2007 - and fifth of his career - after pitching a career-high 8.1 innings at Fordham last Thursday. This is the fifth time a La Salle pitcher received the award this year.

He held the Rams scoreless for the first eight innings of the game, scattering just five hits and fanning five batters. However, with the Explorers clinging to a 1-0 lead, with one out and a runner on first in the bottom of the ninth, La Salle went to the pen and the Rams eventually pulled out the victory, 2-1 in 10 innings.

Formed in 2006 with the mission of increasing the exposure of college baseball in the area, Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball is comprised of the five Division I universities in city that sponsor baseball. The organization, which was called the Philadelphia Diamond Five last season, is now under the umbrella of the Philadelphia Big Five office.

The Big 5 will announce a Player and Pitcher of the Week every Monday during the season, a result of voting conducted by the area head coaches. This was the final release of the 2007 season. The second annual All-Big 5 baseball team will be announced at the conclusion of the season - which will be either later today or tomorrow.

In other voting conducted by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area, Waters was selected again to the 2007 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Baseball Team

This is the second straight year that he has been named to the all-area team. For a complete list of the team, click on the link above.

This is Waters third academic award he has picked up this season - fifth of his career - as he has already been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team and was a two-time member (2006-07) of the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team.

He is still in the running for the national Academic All-American team as he moved on to the national ballot after receiving the district honor.
