Softball Earns Another A-10 Win; 6-1 Over Rhode Island

May 4, 2007

KINGSTON, RI - The La Salle Explorers (16-20, 8-8 A-10) captured the first of two games this weekend, when they lead a five run charge on the Rams in the fourth inning thanks to five separate RBIs from five different Explorers.

Both teams managed five hits in the first three innings but would produce no runs, thanks mostly to the pitching of Laura Dezolt and Ram Katie Halcomb.

DeZolt got it done at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 hitting and bringing in the first of five runs in the fourth inning.  A double from her and a single from Jen Street began to wear down Halcomb's pitching, and after an error in the field and three walks the Explorers ended their half of the fourth with 5-0 lead.

After the Rams packed the bases in the sixth inning, a passed ball and a ground out gave Rhode Island their first and only run of the game, as consistent Explorer fielding kept the Rams from bringing in any more runners.

Michelle Sullivan earned her team-leading 22nd RBI off of a sacrifice fly to seal the victory, and 1-2-3 URI seventh inning ended the first of two games this weekend.

The girls will play their second game against the Rams tomorrow at 12:00PM.  Following that game, the Explorers will travel to Amherst, where they will play a doubleheader against the defending conference champions the UMass Minutemen.

These final three games finish off the Explorers' regular season.  If they manage to stay within the top six of the A-10 throughout the weekend, they will remain in Massachusetts to compete in the conference championships, held May 9th-12th at UMass's softball complex.
