Softball Drops Doubleheader to UMass Minutemen in Final Games of the Season

May 6, 2007

Final Stats

AMHERST, MA - The La Salle Explorers (16-23, 8-11 A-10) could not connect with the bat today, leaving the Massachusetts Minutemen to take both games of this weekend's doubleheader, 5-0 and 3-0.

Brandice Balschmiter struck out 16 Explorer batters in the first game, which yielded only two hits by La Salle before UMass came out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.

It would be a similar scene in the second game as well, with La Salle making contact off of two hits from Kelli Curcio and senior Vinnie Caputo in the third inning.  They would be left on base, however, as the Explorers would go scoreless the rest of the game.

Laura Dezolt struck out two of 24 batters and kept the Minutemen at bay for three innings before they scored their first run in the fourth and two more off a two RBI homerun.

The Explorers will now travel back home, as their three losses this weekend were enough to drop them into 7th place in the Atlantic 10 and place them out of contention for the championship games this week in Massachusetts.
