The La Salle field hockey team started off the 2007 on the right foot, as the blue and gold shut out Monmouth on Saturday afternoon, 2-0. Freshman Beth Carey and sophomore Kara Harpel each scored a goal, and junior Maria Allegretto picked up a pair of assists for the Explorers (1-0).
La Salle wasted little time scoring, as a shot from Allegretto was deflected and driven into the back of the cage by Carey for her first collegiate goal. Harpel padded the La Salle lead early in the second half, as the Explorers' leading scorer from a year ago drove home her first goal of the 2007 season.
Goalkeeper Ellen Axelsen and the La Salle defense kept the Hawks attack in check all afternoon. Axelsen turned away seven Monmouth shots in recording the shutout.
The Explorers outshot Monmouth 27-9.
La Salle looks to make it two in a row tomorrow when they return home to face Ball State at DeVincent Field at 12:00 p.m.
