Red-Hot Explorers Shut Out Ball State, 3-0

Aug. 26, 2007

Box Score

On a hot and muggy afternoon at DeVincent Field, the La Salle field hockey team scorched Ball State, 3-0. Jess Menge, Colleen Lechner and Kara Harpel all scored goals for the Explorers (2-0).

Goalkeeper Ellen Axelsen stopped six shots in recording her second shutout in as many days.

The La Salle offensive attack was held in check for the majority of the first half, but Menge got the scoring underway 23 minutes into the game. Lechner's penalty corner was deflected to Menge, who found the back of the cage for her first career goal.

The score remained 1-0 headed into intermission, thanks in part to the stingy Explorer defense and an excellent save by Axelsen.

Lechner made the score 2-0 in favor of the blue and gold early on in the second half. For Lechner, it was also her first career goal.

Harpel gave the Explorers a comfortable three-goal lead just moments later, taking the feed from Maria Allegretto and delivering her second goal of the season.

The Explorers received strong defensive efforts from Colleen Nesbitt and Haley Froshour in preserving the shutout.

La Salle looks to go 3-0 when they host Drexel this Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. on DeVincent Field.
