At Mount Saint Mary's, the Mounts defeated the Explorers in a non-conference match that was a lot closer than the score suggests. La Salle failed to capitalize in doubles, losing two of the three matches. George Gennaoui and Jon Maula dropped #1 doubles, 8-5, while Ryan Knarr and Andy Petrusky fell 8-6 at #2 in a match that included only one break of serve. Eric Glick and Matt Rivera got the Explorers on the board at #3 with a 9-7 victory.
In singles, the match was up for grabs with the Mounts eventually on to steal the show sweeping the #1-#5 singles positions including three matches that went to a third and deciding set. At #1 Favio Osorio overwhelmed Gennaoui, 6-0, 6-4. At #2, Matt Rivera fought valiantly but in the end came up short, losing to Mount freshman Andrew Marinucci 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. At #3, it was much of the same as 6'5 fresman Pat Plastow defeated La Salle's Eric Glick 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. At #4, Jon Maula kept La Salle's hopes alive for a victory until the very end, playing a three hour match but coming up short, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. At #5, Explorer Ryan Knarr lost to hard hitting Mount Derek Taylor, who improved his career record to 33-9 following the victory. At #6, La Salle's Andy Petrusky got the Explorers on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 victory.
"Today was the true beginning of our season, the first test we've had and we didn't live up to our expectations," said Explorer coach Ed Colfer. " In the three singles matches that went three sets, we didn't show much passion and heart and that's a little disappointing considering how much we put into our practices preparing for those situations. We executed well in doubles but just weren't able to come up with the goods in crunch time."
