PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University Women's Soccer team hosted two-time defending Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Champion Saint Louis Friday night at McCarthy Stadium and fell 2-0 in the A-10 opener for both schools.
In a span of four minutes, the Billikens turned a scoreless tie into a two-goal advantage thanks to a pair of services from Cassi Winchell.
The first in the 61st minute was played through the box from the right side and scored by Alyssa Mautz for her third tally of the season. Exactly four minutes later, Julia Bradenberg took a pass from Winchell and put it into the net for her first of the season.
Up until that point, the Explorers and Billikens played to a scoreless tie with each team having several scoring chances to break it.
Saint Louis (4-3-0, 1-0-0 A-10) had the first opportunity eight minutes in when Winchell headed a Kelly Waeckerle cross toward the net, but La Salle goalie Amy Grant was there for the save.
Five minutes later, Kristin Hextall took a pass from Traci DePasquale and shot to the far post. The ball hung up in the wind and was saved by Billiken netminder Dominique Turk.
In the 37th minute, La Salle had its best chance to break the tie when, off a free kick by Dana Giordano, Lauren Barker headed a ball that hit the far post.
After intermission, Winchell took another pass from Waeckerle on the right side of the goal and shot far post, but again Grant was there to make a diving save.
But Saint Louis broke through at the 60:15 mark and added an insurance goal just four minutes later.
Turk won her fourth game in net for Saint Louis, registering her third shutout of the season, while Grant, who made five saves, took the loss.
La Salle (5-4-0, 0-1-1 A-10) returns to A-10 action, Sunday, taking on the Spiders in Richmond, with a 1 PM start.
