Men's Soccer Falls 2-0 to Fordham

Oct. 17, 2008

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Fordham's Matt Courtenay scored in the first half and Peter Graham added insurance in the second to top La Salle 2-0 on Friday night at McCarthy Stadium. The loss drops the Explorers to 2-8-3 overall (1-2 Atlantic 10), while the Rams improve to 6-5-1 overall (2-1 Atlantic 10).

Courtenay's score came just 14 minutes into the game. Teammate Tim Richardson shot the ball into Explorer goalkeeper Kyle Quigley, but the ball bounced off of Quigley and Courtenay put the rebound into an empty net.

Graham's insurance goal came in the 71st minute off of a pass from Abe Chehebar, which Graham sank into the back of the net on a long kick from the left side.

The Explorers did not lack chances to come back in this game. They outshot the visitors 13-11 and nearly got on the board several times. The closest came on a free kick taken by Colin Whalen in the 88th minute, which sailed just wide. Tom Kalpokas, the reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, also rocketed in a kick which was stopped on a diving save by Ram goalie Ryan Meara.

Kalpokas and Brian Barry led all players with three shots each. Shot attempts were balanced on both ends of the field as seven other Explorers took a shot each and 10 different players attempted for the Rams.

Quigley suffered the loss in goal for the Explorers and stopped four shots in the effort, while Meara took the win for the Rams while making seven saves.

The Explorers hit the road next weekend as they head to Xavier for a 7 p.m. match on Friday, and then to Dayton for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
