PHILADELPHIA, PA – Trailing 1-0 late in the second half the La Salle Explorers peppered the Massachusetts cage for a flurry of attempts but the nationally-ranked Minutewomen (#17) fought off the assault and added an insurance goal for the 2-0 win on Friday afternoon.
The Minutewomen and Explorers went scoreless through the first half with La Salle (5-11, 0-3) successfully defending four penalty corners and keeper Emma Ruth making fives saves. The Explorers were held without a corner for the first 35 minutes and launched only two shots.
UMass (11-3, 3-0) took the lead three minutes and four seconds into the second half when Cher King settled a ball in traffic and teed it up for Katie Kelly who blasted it in from close to eight feet in front of the right post.
King would assist on the insurance goal as well after the UMass defense held off an Explorer charge and then went on attack. King received a deep drive down the bench sideline and turned in along the end line as Ruth came out of the cage to defend. With the keeper committed Mary Shea filled the lane and received a perfect pass from King and easily pushed it into the cage with three minutes and 42 seconds remaining.
The Explorers would be awarded only one corner on the afternoon but put six of their eight shots on cage. Freshman Lindsay Fry led with four shots – three of which were on goal – including a pair in La Salle’s attack before UMass’ second goal.
The Explorers will return to action next Friday, October 24th for a 3:00 PM match-up with Richmond in Atlantic 10 play. Explorer seniors will be honored on the final home game of their careers.
