Oct. 26, 2008

Box Score

Fenton, Mo. - A Saint Louis rally in the last minute fell short as La Salle captured a 2-1 Atlantic 10 field hockey win on Sunday at Anheuser-Busch Center.

The Explorers’ Maria Allegretto scored in the 13th minute of play to strike first and the La Salle offense forced Billikens’ freshman goalie Alex LaBarge  to make four saves in the first period. SLU was not able to generate a solid shot on goal, and La Salle held the 1-0 lead at intermission.

Allegretto struck again halfway through the second period to give the Explorers a 2-0 lead and enough cushion to secure their first Atlantic 10 victory of the season.

The Billikens’ persistent offensive effort finally paid off in the final minute when Molly Boyne fired a shot on goal that was redirected by Emily Kassab into the cage with 31 seconds left in the game.

The Billikens mounted a final attack and earned a penalty corner with time running out on the clock but the Explorers cleared the ball and sealed the 2-1 win in their penultimate contest of the season.

For the senior forward Allegretto, the goals were her fifth and sixth of the season which is now a team high.

Saint Louis fell to 4-12 on the season and 0-5 in the A-10. The Explorers improved to 6-12 overall, 1-4 in the A-10. The Explorers’ final game of the season comes next Saturday, November 1st with a noon start at West Chester.
