PHILADELPHIA – After falling behind by two goals in the first half, La Salle Women’s Soccer pressured the visiting St. Bonaventure Bonnies in the second half, registering 14 shots, but their rally came up one goal short as the Explorers fell 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference match Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium.
St. Bonaventure (6-6-0, 1-3-0 A-10) took the early lead on a goal by Courtney Bosse, her third of 2008. In the 11th minute, Anna Cunningham played a thru ball to Bosse, who dribbled in on a breakaway and shot from about 20 yards out to put her team up 1-0.
The Bonnies added an insurance goal at the 36:05 mark of the first half on an unassisted goal by Cunningham. On the right side of the field, Cunningham collected a deflected cross and shot to the far post, which beat the Explorers’ goalkeeper Melissa Sanger for her seventh goal of the season.
In the first half, the Explorers were outshot 7-2 as Sanger made four saves, but the second half was a different story as La Salle peppered the Bonnies goal with 14 shots – eight on goal – and one found the back of the net with just over 13 minutes left in the game.
Traci DePasquale took a pass from Kierstyn Mabey and shot from 12 yards out to score her fourth of the season, 19th of her career. That puts her sixth all-time on the career goals list at La Salle and gives her 51 career points, which is eighth all-time.
After pulling to within a goal at 2-1, La Salle still managed three more shots, two of which were saved by Bonnies’ goalie Nicole Markert. She saved six shots in the second half, and the team saved one – on a DePasquale shot in the 65th minute – to help her team to the victory.
La Salle (5-5-2, 1-2-1 A-10) will remain at home for its next two contests this upcoming week – which will be doubleheaders with the Men’s team. The Women host Fordham, Friday at 5 PM followed by the Men’s A-10 opener versus Saint Louis at 7:30 PM. On Sunday, the Women will host Penn at 3 PM, a game that follows the Men’s game versus Charlotte at 12 PM.
