DAYTON, OH - Through its first five conference games, La Salle Women's Soccer stood 1-3-1, but then went on an unbeaten streak of five straight, which included four consecutive wins, to put itself in a position to advance to the Atlantic 10 Championships.
However, the Explorers still needed one point at Dayton on Sunday in order to qualify, but the Flyers ended their run with a 2-0 victory, which also helped Dayton earn the number two seed in the upcoming tournament. La Salle finished in a tie for sixth place with Duquesne, but tiebreaker procedures gave the advantage to the Dukes.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie through the first half, but the Flyers outshot La Salle 7-0 in the frame. The match was still tied 73 minutes into the contest, as La Salle goalie Melissa Sanger kept coming up with big saves - she registered nine at this point in the contest.
Dayton (14-5-1, 8-2-1 A-10) broke up the tie, though, at the 74:07 mark, as Kelly Blumenschein notched her fifth of the season off an assist from Kathleen Beljan. Then just a little more than six minutes later, Blumenschein added an insurance goal off a pass from Caitlin Proffitt to cushion the Flyer advantage.
The Explorers managed five shots in the game, and just two on goal with Flyer netminder Deana Waintraub coming up with both stops. Sanger suffered the loss, but made a total of 10 saves, her second double figure save output of the season.
La Salle (9-8-3, 5-4-2 A-10) ends its season with the loss, despite putting up some good numbers throughout the season. Among single-season numbers, the Explorers scored the fifth-most goals, tied for the fourth-most assists, while the eight losses are tied for third fewest in a season, the three ties are the most ever, and the five shutouts are tied for the fifth-most.
