PHILADELPHIA - Senior Margaret Elderton sank a pair of free throws with 6.4 seconds left on the clock to give La Salle Women's Basketball a two-point lead and the visiting Drexel Dragons would not get a shot off before the buzzer, giving the Explorers a 48-46 victory, Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Tom Gola Arena.

The free throws came after Drexel had a possession to break the tie. Nicole Hester missed a three-pointer with 23 seconds left and Gabriela Marginean grabbed the offensive board, but turned the ball over after dribbling the ball off her foot in the right corner of the court.

It was that pair, though, that helped erase a five-point Explorer advantage with less than three minutes to go in the game. Trailing 45-40, Hester scored on a lay-up and after Marginean grabbed a defensive rebound, she scored on the other end to pull Drexel to within one with 1:42 left.

Elderton was fouled on La Salle's next possession, but converted just one of her free throws, putting the Explorers up two, but 10 seconds later, Marginean pulled down an offensive rebound and put it in to tie the game at 46-all with 1:15 left. It was Drexel's 13th second-chance point in the afternoon, opposed to La Salle's four.

It was Marginean again, coming up with a steal on the Explorers' next possession, to give the Dragons a shot at breaking the tie with 47 seconds left, but Hester could not hit, then the turnover, and Elderton's free throws.

The defensive battled was close early with La Salle taking a quick four-point lead on Tara Lapetina's three pointer 4:43 into the game, putting the Explorers up 11-7.

Drexel (1-2) responded with an 8-0 run, with Marginean scoring five of her team-high 19 in the span, and after Kamile Nacickaite scored back-to-back baskets, the Dragons were up 17-13 with 10:30 left before the break.

La Salle answered back with its own 8-0 run, holding Drexel scoreless for five minutes. Ashley Gale converted an old-fashion three, Morgan Robertson scored on a fast break, and after Antonia Gale knocked down a three - the first of her career - the Explorers were back up four, 21-17 with 7:41 before intermission.

The Dragons and Marginean then took control of the game. She scored six straight points to give Drexel a two-point lead, Jasmina Rosseel hit a three, and Marginean also hit a three to give her team the largest lead of the game at eight, 29-21 with 1:43 to go in the half.

Nadia Duncan hit a pair of free throws to pull La Salle to within six at the break, and out of it, a 7-1 run in the first 4:42 capped by Jamie Walsh's jumper tied the game at 30-all.

Five quick points by Nacickaite and a free throw by Marginean put the Dragons back on top 36-32, but the Explorers would hold Drexel's top offensive threat Marginean - who became the first Dragon in school history to score at least 30 points in back-to-back games - scoreless until 1:42 left in the game.

The Explorers used a 13-4 run over the next 11 minutes to turn its four-point deficit into a five-point advantage. The span included an 8-0 run where La Salle knocked down four foul shots. When Robertson scored her 13th point of the contest with 5:19 left in the game, it was the Explorers last field goal.

They went 6-of-9 from the foul line over the game's last five minutes, and outshot the Dragons from the line in the game. La Salle was 17-of-24, while Drexel was just 3-of-5.

Robertson added a team-high five boards and three assists, Gale scored nine, and Jenna Gilbert had five points and four boards in the contest.

La Salle (3-1) now heads out on a four-game road swing, which begins with a visit to Miami (OH) on Tuesday with a tip time of 7 PM, before heading out to California to take part in the St. Mary's Hilton-Concord Thanksgiving Classic, Nov. 28-29. They play the hosts on Friday at 10 PM.

Additional Notes:
- La Salle is held below 50 and wins for the first time since Feb. 21, 1974 versus Beaver College.
- In the 24th meeting between the two schools, La Salle improves to 18-5 against the Dragons. The Explorers are 13-1 all-time at home versus Drexel and is a perfect 6-0 in Tom Gola Arena.
- La Salle, who averaged just 7.5 offensive boards last year, hits double figures in back-to-back games on the offensive glass since Dec. 1 (at Binghamton, 14) and Dec. 8 (vs. Quinnipiac, 11), 2007.
- Minus the opener, in which she was held scoreless at Villanova, Robertson is averaging 16.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game in the last three (all at home).
